In this workshop, we will explore the body’s ecstasies, vagaries, monstrosities, and failures. Participants will be encouraged to use both fiction and nonfiction to unpack questions like: How does the body hold texture, memory, metaphor? What is our relationship to the bodies of others? What can the genre of body horror teach us about ourselves? How do we write about desire, pleasure, pain, change, illness, and death? The class is a mix of readings, conversation, and generative/responsive writing; please come prepared to write and share.
Please note: there will be one day of overlap with visual artist Ilana Savdie’s “The Monstrous Body” workshop, which will be running simultaneously. On that day, both classes will be doing a mix of written and visual prompts in a shared space. No visual art experience necessary!
