An Artist Under the Radar in Plain View

Jerome Greene, the Facilities Director at Fine Arts Work Center (FAWC) in Provincetown, embodies the unexpected twists of an artistic life. From New England roadie to managing one of the most prestigious artist residencies, Greene’s journey is as colorful as the art he still creates.

“I love my job,” Greene says, describing the cyclical nature of FAWC and the constant influx of new ideas from visiting artists and writers. His role is crucial in preparing the center’s 30 apartments and 20 studios for the ever-changing roster of creative minds.

Despite his demanding position, Greene maintains his artistic practice, participating in figure painting sessions he helped establish 20 years ago or drawing at the Old Colony Tap while local bands play. His unique perspective on responsibility in the art world is summed up in his wry observation:

“I have worked my whole life to be irresponsible. And what do they do? They put me in the most responsible job at FAWC.”
