Tara Betts Speculating on Joy & Futures in Poetry Poetry August 22 to August 26, 2022 Number of Participants: 0 Price: $550.00 Format: 1 Week Asynchronous Workshop

In this workshop, we’ll consider the significance of emphasizing joy, even in challenging times and crisis-laden moments. We’ll imagine the freedom that we want to see in the world and consider how we build our own worlds in our imaginations and our real physical environments. We will also read and discuss poems and speculative short stories by Danez Smith, NK Jemisin, Pablo Neruda, and others as launchpads for our own writing.

Tara Betts is the author of the poetry collections Refuse to Disappear, Break the Habit, and Arc & Hue. In addition to her work as a teaching artist and mentor for young poets, she has taught at Rutgers University, University of Illinois-Chicago, DePaul University, Northwestern University, and at Stateville Prison via Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project. She is the Inaugural Poet for The People Practitioner Fellow at University of Chicago. Tara is also the Poetry Editor at The Langston Hughes Review and founder of the nonprofit organization The Whirlwind Learning Center on Chicago’s South Side.
