To gather, glean, fragment, trace, disrupt, layer, erase, mend, and attend to what remains: collage is a way of noticing, making connections, and unearthing new meanings.
Open to participants of all experience levels and disciplines, Ecologies of Touch welcomes those with an ongoing project, a collection of materials, or simply a curiosity about collage and image-making.
Inspired by the unique ecology of Cape Cod and the ways its shifting landscapes and materials have informed my own artistic practice, this four-week workshop invites participants to consider how their environments shape their creative work and how archives—official, marginal, and speculative—can be gathered, crafted, and transformed through material exploration and critical inquiry.
Participants will engage in hands-on experimentation, short readings, discussions of contemporary practitioners, and critical feedback as they create a series of works and develop their own visual language.
About the Instructor/Moderator
S Emsaki is an interdisciplinary artist from Isfahan, Iran, currently living and working in New York City. Emsaki’s practice spans collage, printmaking, in-situ drawing, video, and archival intervention, examining petro-subjects, extraction, and material histories. She is a 2025–26 Studio Residency Program artist at Smack Mellon and the 2024–25 recipient of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in Brooklyn, NY. Emsaki is a recent alum of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and holds an MFA from Yale University and a BA from UC Berkeley, where she received the Wendy Sussman Award and the Eisner Prize. Her work has been exhibited and screened at venues including Microscope Gallery, NY; Smack Mellon, NY; Ashkal Alwan’s aashra Programming in Beirut, Lebanon; the San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries, CA; Provincetown Art Association and Museum, MA; Westbeth Gallery, NY; and Gallatin Galleries at NYU. Emsaki has participated in residencies and fellowships at Yaddo, NY; the Fine Arts Work Center, MA; Atlantic Center for the Arts, FL; the Institute of Contemporary Art; and the Paul Mellon Centre in London, UK. In 2025, she received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant.
