Dating back to Basho in 17th-century Japan, haibun uses haiku to make prose leap off the page. In this workshop, we’ll explore the rich history of haiku and haibun, from Basho’s timeless travel logs to an array of modern innovations. The class will start by unlocking the misunderstood magic of haiku itself—which is not a matter of counting syllables, but instead the creation of “two worlds in one breath,” where the power of metaphor intensifies inside the smallest of containers. We’ll then focus on the art of making larger leaps that ignite meaning and emotion, sharing examples and techniques to spark connections that reach far beyond the tradition itself.
The haibun isn’t just a form—it’s a template that can be applied to any type of creative writing. By the end of this generative workshop, you’ll have your own original haiku and haibun, and a new understanding of the way poetry moves.
