Mary Gabriel’s esteemed book Ninth Street Women is the inspiration and source material for this month-long weekly seminar. We will look intently at the work of five of the women who were in the seminal 1951 Ninth Street Art Exhibition of Paintings and Sculptures: Lee Krasner, Elaine De Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan and Joan Mitchell. Overshadowed by husbands and male critics during the mid-century Abstract Expressionist movement, these artists are receiving their due, in large part because of Gabriels’ book, with exhibits and recognition around the world. We will dive into their artistic philosophies, methods, and personal lives in an informative online lecture series of four one-hour presentations. Each segment is divided into three areas: a powerpoint presentation of each artist, a lively dialogue as we respond to the work, and relevant takeaways for our own enrichment.
Laura Shabott's work is sparked by a deep need to capture the life force with color, composition, and form, either working with a model, who is sometimes herself, or with objects and plants. The canvas, collage or drawing contains the energy and the history of the process.
