Who are you writing for? We tend to treat this as a marketing question, but the moment you sit down to write the story of your life, the reader you imagine is already in the room with you, shaping what you say and how you say it. I have written two memoirs, and they are very different from each other, largely because they were written with very different audiences in mind. Waiting to Be Heard was intended for a broad public that had been force fed a false version of me. Free was addressed to readers who might recognize their own search for meaning in mine. Same life, same narrator, different reader, different book.
In this seminar we will examine the audiences we’ve inherited and the ones we’ve chosen, and discover how imagining your reader can unlock your voice and your story. This two-hour seminar combines lecture and Q&A. There will be opportunities for sharing, but this is not a workshop and no feedback will be given.
About the Instructor/Moderator
Amanda Knox is an exoneree, journalist, comedian, and best-selling author of Waiting to Be Heard and FREE: My Search for Meaning. Between 2007 and 2015, she spent four years in an Italian prison and eight years on trial for a murder she didn’t commit.
She is the host of the podcast Hard Knox, she was an Executive Producer and writer on the Hulu mini-series The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, and is featured in the Hulu documentary Mouth of the Wolf. Her debut one-woman show, Cartwheel, premieres at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, 2026.
She is an advocate for criminal justice reform and media ethics. She serves on The Innocence Center Board of Directors, and is the recipient of the Innocence Network Impact Award and the Catalyst for Change Award from the Washington Innocence Project.
