Celebrating One of the First FAWC Fellows and a Cornerstone of the Cape’s Creative Community
This April, Farm Projects in Wellfleet is proud to present HUH, a retrospective exhibition honoring the extraordinary life and work of Peter Scarbo Frawley (1943–2025). A true staple of both the Wellfleet and Provincetown communities, Frawley’s artistic journey was deeply intertwined with the cultural history of the Outer Cape for over 40 years.
Frawley’s legacy is particularly significant as he was among the very first poetry fellows at the Fine Arts Work Center (FAWC) in Provincetown, serving from 1969 to 1971. This early period defined much of his creative foundation, and the upcoming exhibition will feature rare typewriter poems from his time as a fellow.
As a concrete poet, actor, and performer, Frawley’s work was guided by the principle that a poem should be an “object to be perceived rather than read”. Using everyday tools—a Smith-Corona typewriter, Letraset transfer letters, paint sticks, and chalk on slate—he transformed language into physical form, stripping words to their simplest, most resonant essence. His work was a familiar sight across Wellfleet, appearing on chalkboards, windows, and in outdoor installations.
Beyond his visual and literary art, Peter was a founding actor at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater and a member of the New Provincetown Players. This retrospective serves as a tribute to his five decades of practice and his meaningful contributions to Cape Cod’s heritage.
