FAWC Community Partnership: A Cultivated Friendship
September 3, 2025

The Fine Arts Work Center is proud to present A Cultivated Friendship, a staged reading of a play about the writers Edith Wharton and Louis Bromfield, on Friday, September 12 at 6:00 PM. A Cultivated Friendship is a staged reading of a play that explores the complex relationship between the writers Edith Wharton and Louis Bromfield. This event will take place in the Stanley Kunitz Common Room at the Fine Arts Work Center.
Outside 1930s Paris, American novelists Edith Wharton and Louis Bromfield were unlikely friends. She was 34 years his senior, he was a Midwestern farmer, and both were vocal about their conflicting political views. Even so, the two expatriates formed an intimate bond that transcended differences. Both loved gardening, travel, writing, and renovating historic homes—fodder for years of correspondence that playwrights John Dennis Anderson and Karen Vuranch have adapted into A Cultivated Friendship, a play workshopped at FAWC that interweaves truth and fiction based on Wharton and Bromfield’s distinctive rapport.
The 75-minute performance will include a Q&A with the audience. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.
