This fall, the Hudson D. Walker Gallery, with the support of the Stephen and Palmina Pace Foundation, is transformed into a 4-week residency space for mid-career artists. We are excited to welcome and host Pieter Paul Pothoven, a 2013-2014 and 2022-2023 Visual Arts Fellow.

During his residency, Pieter Paul plans to develop a new iteration of 11:59, a project that he first created during his residency at the former Hudson D. Walker Gallery in 2014. The work centers on a photograph from 1907 that he discovered in the archives of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum. An anonymous photograph shows the construction site days before the ceremony takes place with groups of onlookers laughing and conversing. The atmosphere is informal, a contrast to the official ceremony about to take place.11:59 attempts to resuscitate that fleeting moment before the monument’s granite, Theodore Roosevelt’s speech, and the official narrative take hold. More than a decade after first making the work, he is interested in returning to this work through the lens of his current practice. Pieter Paul hopes to involve incoming fellows in conversations about the layered histories of Provincetown, the Pilgrim Monument, and the Netherlands, where the Pilgrims lived for more than a decade before departing in 1620. As a Dutch artist, he is interested in how this transatlantic history continues to shape the present on both sides of the ocean.
