Picture books—shorter, illustrated stories, intended to be read aloud to children—are a distinct art form. Good picture books often echo formalist poetry, with tight structure and intentional repetition. This workshop will examine how picture books work on a granular level, through close reading and analysis of mentor texts. Following group discussion and brainstorming, participants will use these takeaways to either generate new work or refine existing projects. Attendees can expect to leave with a deeper understanding of how to craft picture books, along with new or improved manuscripts and tips about the publication process along the way.
